The new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is scheduled for release in July so it made some sense to refresh my memory on the original and see the Curse of the Black Pearl on DVD. As clearly seen on Johnny Depp’s character – Captain Jack Sparrow, I’m amazed at what a little well placed eyeliner will do to significantly increase dramatic appearances. Several interior rooms have been inspected and furniture is moving into the building. This includes meeting room tables, computer lab desks, chairs, lounge sofas/coffee tables, and the USU administration modular furniture. Like eyeliner, it is truly amazing what a little furniture will do to increase dramatic appearances! The interior of the new building really looks great. There is still more furniture to come and exact placement of all the furniture has yet to be set, but the progress is amazing.
A meeting was held this week to begin the programming of the new security system. There will be seven alarm zones within the building and 26 cameras that monitor the exterior and key interior areas. The state-of-the-art web-based security system allows for remote monitoring, proximity key card entry, and is adjustable/expandable to meet future security needs. It is a tremendous system.
Other than the completion of the Mercantile and Coffee House (still scheduled to be done in June) the only significant portion of the interior of the building that needs to be addressed is the flooring option for the first floor lobby. A preliminary cost estimate to provide polish, color and sealer to the floor was provided late this week and it appears to be within the budget. Facilities Planning Design & Construction (FPDC) staff are confirming the exact scope with the contractor to be sure the finished project meets performance and finish expectations, but the preliminary estimate is promising.
The exterior of the building and site work are largely in the final stages. The finish on the Grand Salon exterior stairs and installing one additional light pole to match the existing poles in Phase 1 are the two major items that need to be completed. It won’t be long until we will be able to open the walkway through the building – formally called Plaza del Sol. That said until the final detailed punch list is complete (and for your safety) please mind the fences and walk around the site.
