Renovation Update – April 21, 2006

Several concrete pours have happened since the last renovation update.  As concrete is being poured today several people asked what the overall layout will look like.  There is a center circle that will be either exposed black aggregate rock similar to what is found in Matador Square or gray and red colored concrete to match the star pattern outside Subway and Wells Fargo.  A decision on this will be made Monday morning and is largely driven at this point by cost.  The rest of the site concrete will be composed of an alternating pattern of exposed 50/50 aggregate and broom finished concrete to match the walkway east of Subway.  Another area where concrete was recently poured includes the space outside the Grand Salon which has a curious 12’ circle in it placed as a site for a future water feature as funds become available.  (If you know of anyone willing to donate approximately $40,000 to $75,000 for this great addition to the Student Union, please put them in touch with me.)  For a look at these areas, please visit the USU web camera at http://usu.csun.edu/studentunion/online/webcam.shtml.  By pressing the “Start Control” button and waiting a few seconds you will be able to control where the camera looks.  Have fun!

Progress on the new Mercantile Exchange is moving along well.  The reach-in coolers have been installed on the south wall.  The interior walls have been painted and the drop ceiling installed.  A new exterior sign is also in the process of being designed and fabricated.  It will be hung above the doors on the curved wall.

Exterior metal painting on the stairs, sun screens, and decking continues this week.  Additionally the metal sun screening has been installed and was caulked this week to prevent rusting.  The sun shades should cut down the sun’s summer glare by 50% near the entrances of the Student Development & International Programs office and the Freudian Sip Coffee House.  The last of the fritted glass panels is also scheduled to be installed next week.  This will finalize what is hoped to be a signature architectural feature of the new Hub building – especially when internally lit at night.  The concept behind the panels is to cut the sun’s glare in the day and provide a warm glow at night.

Audio visual and security system installation is making significant progress throughout the building.  A 60” plasma screen TV was installed in the Executive Board Room this week that will augment the video conferencing capabilities of the room.  The mounts for two 36” TVs that will flank the 72” TV in the C. Richard Scott TV Lounge were also installed.  Automatic roll-down screens, speakers, control panels, card-key perimeter access, and video cameras for the state-of-the-art security system have also been installed.  Welcome to the 21st century!

As always the Renovation Team strongly encourages any questions and suggestions that may benefit the project.  Please direct inquiries to Jason Wang, Associate Director for Operations & Services at jason.wang@csun.edu or 818-677-6579.

Respectfully,
